Practical Life
The purpose of exercises such as 'sorting', 'pouring', 'lacing', 'cutting', 'folding' etc. that children use in their day to day lives, is to develop concentration, hand eye coordination, attention to detail and muscle development, which indirectly prepares a child for writing.
Sensorial
"The child learns through his senses, his language is universal". The purpose of the sensorial exercises is the isolation of a single quality such as color, weight, shape, texture, sound and smell in each exercise. Sensorial equipment in a Montessori classroom help children to discriminate, classify, and compare concepts such as length, height, weight, width and depth.
Math
"The Montessori child does not learn math, he experiences it". In math, a child begins learning mathematical concepts through the use of concrete mathematical material such as the "Number Rods' and the "Sandpaper Numbers". He eventually graduates to abstraction in mathematical computation. Chidren master the four basic operations of Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division using specialized equipment.
Language
"There is little bit of the artist in every child; It is but a small step from drawing to writing". "Phonics" is the base of all language. From developing pencil control through the use of the "Metal Insets", the child goes on to learning "sounds" with the help of the "Movable Alphabet". The combination of both helps the child to read and write.
